Hehe, the idea is indeed tempting but you should know that creating a marketplace like Vinted is EXTREMELY difficult…
Besides the usual difficulties of starting a business, you also have the « marketplace » aspect where you need to recruit sellers AND buyers.
Not to mention that competition is fierce and that generally, on the internet, there’s a « winner takes it all » effect, meaning the first to win the market becomes almost unshakeable…
Nothing is impossible, but it takes years of work and often millions in funding to find. ![]()
The problem is all the marketing, money-wise it’s an impossible investment
Especially if you only offer a copy-paste of what already exists. Just look at Beebs, which is actually more interesting for buyers, which is referenced by Google and yet is struggling.
Hello,
Yes, I was launching that as a joke, it was following a total ban after posting here?.
Is Vinted monitoring the site?.
But I am aware that it is no small feat, they achieved it, but how many coders, how many millions of Euros and all the rest?.
Go on, dreams are not taxed yet, let’s enjoy them.
Have a nice day ![]()
they already took almost 10 years to be profitable, which shows the effort required
I hope it’s not one of their biggest expenses given all the bugs there are (whereas they are very rare on other platforms)
I love this quote! ![]()
Yes, it’s crazy the slew of malfunctions, I wouldn’t be able to do an iota of what their coders do, but they test live on a large scale and they fail continuously and it’s us who pay the price!
Yes, I love it too ![]()
they are clearly investing in 3 areas, Vinted Go, the online payment system, and the 3rd… I forgot.
At the time, eBay had 300 full-time senior developers, a budget in the tens of millions.
But what costs the most is customer acquisition. To become known, you have to do large fundraising rounds, and therefore have shareholders, and therefore be profitable, and therefore focus on the short term, and therefore… and therefore…
developing your own site has become very easy, but attracting customers costs a monstrous amount.
Absolutely. The product is easy (today more than ever). Marketing is hard, even extremely hard, for a marketplace where you have to recruit on both sides.
