Analysis: Sales down by 3 since a few days

Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing well during this holiday season!

I know there are several topics about the drop in sales, but I would like to create one to analyze this specific period, which could also serve as a benchmark for future years in order to anticipate the period.

The month of December started well for me, with a very interesting sales volume, but for the past 5 days, my sales have drastically decreased, and I am probably at 1/3 of the sales I usually make.

My question is for everyone, and specifically for those who were here in December 2024 and 2023: Are you experiencing or have you experienced this phenomenon in recent years?

And what are the possible explanations in your opinion:

  • Customers not buying for fear of not receiving in time? (knowing that life goes on after the holidays)
  • A budget allocated to gifts and not necessarily to clothing during this period?
  • Purchases already made in anticipation of winter, therefore less enthusiasm?
  • Yet another change at Vinted?

Let’s brainstorm together and try to understand through your examples and experiences, with respect and kindness, of course

Hello,

As far as I’m concerned, for the months of December 2023/2024/2025, I’m achieving roughly the same turnover. But since 2025 was catastrophic compared to 2024, I’m waiting for 2026 to have a more concrete comparison.
The number of sales isn’t very telling for me because I can make 20 sales or 50 and get the same turnover.
For your information, I am a micro-enterprise with a small turnover, so I am far from « shipping » 10 packages a day.

Possible explanations:
1 - Vinted and its infernal algorithm. And the fact that it makes professional sellers invisible. Not officially, but we have ALL noticed it!
2 - The opening to new countries between February and April. More conflicting regulations and more competitors.
3 - The majority of people order their Christmas gifts between October and November. And indeed, not receiving last-minute gifts on time is a hindrance. Not to mention that some people leave for the holidays. If they don’t have their package by the scheduled date, it causes even more frustration.
And I know more and more people (myself included) who order or buy toys (my specialty) well in advance. Especially during sales periods. For example: I take advantage of the January sales to plan ahead for birthday gifts and even the following Christmas for my children. Their tastes don’t change drastically from one year to the next.

I will see if the 2025 pattern repeats in 2026.

Thank you very much for your testimony and analysis @Yestoyday :folded_hands:

Indeed, not being home for the holidays could be a deterrent to ordering.

In the toy sector, it must be a bit different from clothing (my sector), but some elements are similar.

Hello

I agree with the points raised in the other answers and would add that some buyers are waiting for the January sales and may plan to buy at that time elsewhere than on Vinted.

The January/February period is generally a bit slow for Vinties.

Have a good day anyway!

I’m going to take a few personal vacation days: the best time after all

In 2025, I had much better months in January/February than September/October this year. To my great surprise, in January it didn’t drop at all as I expected.

Otherwise, yes, as I was saying on the other topic, in December I systematically have a drop around the 15th. Quite logical with the explanations Yestoyday already gave.

I don’t know exactly where anymore, but at one point it was stated somewhere in their terms and conditions or their FAQ.

It depends on what you sell, I’m in women’s clothing, the month of December always starts very well and around the 11th of the month, flat calm; it really picks up again at the beginning of February, that’s my personal experience

I am in the same situation: I sell women’s clothing and since the 12th-13th of the month I’ve struggled to make more than one sale per day, when I was making 5 to 10 per day at the beginning of the month…

Hello - as for me, particularly (is that a word??) I sell what’s lying around in my closets (dishes, books, few clothes) and the month of December was my worst month of the year.

I think my shop is on the wrong track. I have over 700 5-star reviews and as many online listings. Items haven’t had any views for 48 hours - favorites are almost non-existent. I feel « ghosted. »

Fortunately, my items are for sale on other platforms that performed better in December. I’m going to neglect Vinted a bit, which takes up a lot of my time. I also see that on the famous American platform, even if the seller pays a commission, there isn’t this race to low prices like on V. and ultimately, even with fewer sales, the turnover is the same or better. Happy holidays to all.

Haha you scoundrels, so being a pro at their place isn’t an advantage.

Personally, December is catastrophic for me. Very little visibility, very few sales. I think this is the first time a December has been this bad since I started this business (in 2020). I hope things will be better in January, but these ups and downs are tiring. But hey, if you go to the « sales temperature » topic, you’ll see that for most people, sales exploded in December. So I guess each case is different… I clearly feel like I’m shadowbanned.

I tell myself that perhaps we should take advantage of it to open up to other platforms and devote our time to transferring these ads, or even start anticipating stocks for spring-summer… I console myself with that

So yes, on my end, we can say that sales « exploded » from November 10th. On the other hand, I would qualify this with several points.

  • Firstly, it’s after 2 catastrophic months, which are usually good (even very good). In the end, this Christmas period allows me to recover well in terms of stock, whereas I had some difficulties in sourcing with the rotten months before. So usually Christmas is a period that allows me to generate cash flow to consider investments (in the premises, trying new suppliers or new products, etc.), this time I’m at best on a catch-up session (we’ll say it’s already not bad and be content with that).
  • Yes, it exploded but it remains lower than in previous years. That said, Vinted is not far behind, it’s mainly the secondary platforms that are dragging me down, there is really a collapse compared to last year.
  • It exploded but it collapsed afterwards. This week is really not great. Okay, Christmas is approaching, it’s normal for it to go down again, but in previous years it wasn’t as violent.

My December should be better than 2024, as I am at 85% of the turnover and it is the 20th of the month.

If online sales have decreased for a week, it is compensated by many more home visits than usual, and for an amount already higher than anything I have observed from March to November.

Many people receive cash at Christmas, which should lead to sustained sales in the last week of December and at the very beginning of January.

A very simple way to know if the drop in sales is linked to a drop in purchases on Vinted is to use the approximation that purchases are linked to traffic on Vinted (fewer people = fewer sales).

Now, Vinted traffic can be estimated by the frequency of the search « Vinted » on Google. And there is a tool for that: Google Trends.

Here are the figures (which are only trends) for 2023, 2024, and 2025:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2023-01-01%202025-12-21&geo=FR&q=vinted&hl=en

You will see that from around December 10th each year, traffic drops significantly. This leads to a mechanical drop in sales compared to the September-November peak.
This is a global analysis and does not apply to every niche market (everything drops, but perhaps not books? video games? I don’t know) but it can explain your observations

Thanks @Clement! I didn’t actually think to check that, and it explains a lot.
It’s the same for Vestiaire Co., Leboncoin, and Etsy, a little less so for Ebay, which is more global and international.

@Clement: Thanks for the analysis. Simple, but it needed to be thought of.
