I’ve never put them in, and never had a problem. As for used items, I don’t have an EAN code for them.
There are categories where it’s mandatory. Even on VHS tapes from the 80s, they asked me for them.
oh : that reminded me of an anecdote : I had found a VHS tape recorded on a VCR in a dumpster, and on it there was a Montpellier Hérault SC match. I think I sold it for €31-32 from memory. It was eBay madness!

In D1 at one time, I believe. I think I saw the match against Lille when they became French champions, I must have seen 2 matches in 20 years.

Back then it was so easy to sell on eBay 
it was truly the golden age of platforms. Plus, we forget, but shipping costs weren’t what they are today and nobody complained about paying them.
Yes. the price of a stamp (before it was only La Poste) has tripled between 2008 and 2026. and quadrupled between 2001, the year of the switch from the franc (3 Francs) to the euro. long live the opening to competition and privatization.
a t-shirt/shirt used to go as a letter with 3 stamps, which is €1.55.

Personally, I bought thousands of euros worth of stamps about ten years ago, since the face value is no longer printed on them. These stamps have appreciated nicely. I don’t know why I have the impression that I’m almost the only one who thought of this.
I did it too, but I found something better:
I used to frank letters AND Colissimo packages in Francs, and I still use a bit of them. In auctions, often collections from a whole life, you can find them, and also on eBay from philatelists.
On the other hand, I spent a lot of time sticking stamps 
One time, a friend and I covered a cardboard box with 1 Franc stamps, haha, it made quite a stack, over 100.
And stamps are also about history, themes, events, creations, and especially seeing the evolution of prices..
Because spending thousands of Euros on stamps isn’t everyone’s priority 
Personally, I preferred to put them into « walls »
Stamps are an excellent investment, they only go up and are a sure value since stamps that are 80 years old are still usable.
